Welcome to baxian.org.uk

This site is primarily a focus and expression of my interests, and will develop slowly as I am able to add new content. I do hope it is of interest, and would welcome your feedback on any of the pages contained within this site.

This section will mainly cover the architectural history and development of churches, together with their features of interest such as monuments, wall paintings, furnishings and stained glass. It will contain reports on individual buildings, county reports, and articles on specific topics. I also hope to include an illustrated glossary of common terms, and entries on appropriate artists and architects. Although I look at churches in other counties from time to time, the focus will be on Hampshire and its neighbouring counties. There will also be a bias towards churches dating from the medieval period to the 18th century, although I hope to cover churches built in the 19th and 20th centuries as well.

These pages will cover my main areas of interest, including sacred music of the Renaissance, English church music, English music of the early twentieth century, Grieg, Brahms, Shostakovich, and the Romantic Piano Concerto. They will take the form of selective reviews or descriptions based primarily on my own collection of compact discs. In some cases comparisons will be made between several recordings of the same repertoire (e.g. Stanford's church music, Saint-SaŽns' Piano Concertos or Shostakovich's String Quartets), although there is no attempt at comprehensive coverage in the manner of BBC Radio 3's Building a Library.
